Spinal Decompression Therapy Q & A

What is spinal decompression therapy?

Spinal decompression is a state-of-the-art nonsurgical procedure that relieves back and neck pain. At Santa Cruz Osteopathic, Dr. Bernstein uses the SpineMED system, the latest advanced system for nonsurgical spinal decompression therapy.

SpineMED spinal decompression therapy relieves pressure in your intervertebral discs. Often, your discs are under tremendous pressure and can’t return to their optimal position.

SpineMED reduces that pressure by separating the vertebrae gently. This allows fluids like crucial nutrients and oxygenated blood to reach your discs and promote healing and retraction.

What does spinal decompression therapy treat?

Spinal decompression therapy is a powerful noninvasive, nonsurgical solution for many conditions that cause back and neck pain, such as:

  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Bulging disc
  • Herniated, slipped, or ruptured disc
  • Sciatica
  • Radiculopathy
  • Facet syndrome
  • Spinal stenosis

For most disc-related issues, spinal decompression is a great solution. Dr. Bernstein may recommend other nonsurgical treatments like regenerative medicine and Osteopathic Manual Medicine, as well.

How does spinal decompression therapy work?

For spinal decompression therapy, Dr. Bernstein positions you comfortably on the treatment table while you're fully clothed. He then performs one of two therapies:

Lumbar spinal decompression therapy

If you're having a lumbar procedure for back pain, patented pelvic restraints secure your pelvis to keep you stable during treatment. Dr. Bernstein uses the patented pelvic tilt panel to electronically move your pelvis, targeting your problem area. This gently pulls your vertebrae and discs apart to relieve pressure in the targeted segment.

Cervical spinal decompression therapy

If you're having a cervical procedure for neck pain, Dr. Bernstein electronically adjusts the cervical panel to the ideal position. Then, he positions your head in a cervical cradle unit and attaches cervical restraints around the bottom of your head to keep your neck stable during the treatment. This gives you controlled movement that relieves pressure and pain in your problem areas.

Spinal decompression therapy sessions are completely painless. In fact, many patients relax so much that they fall asleep during treatment. Each session lasts around 30 minutes. After that, you'll have other complementary treatments that help relieve pain.

How many spinal decompression therapy sessions will I need?

Most patients need around 20 sessions for optimal pain relief. Dr. Bernstein generally recommends daily spinal decompression therapy sessions on weekdays and taking the weekends off until you’re out of pain.
